Each one of us go through trying times during our lives. However, the nature of trying times differ from each other. Currently, we are all going through an unprecedented situation around the world due to a pandemic. Hence, we are all confined to our homes to keep ourselves safe and healthy.

Families are precious to all of us. We all prefer to spend most of our time with our families. However, some people do avoid spending time with family, but it is always beneficial to be with our family members especially if one has grand parents. There are lots of ways to spend time together during these trying moments to get the best advantage out of it.

Some of these ways might help you keep busy and there is a possibility you could turn out to be a far more active personality at the end of the day. Lets see what are these great options available for us.




             IDEAS FOR MAKE EFFECTIVE USE OF YOUR FAMILY TIME

• Look for small repairs required in your home to be fixed. 
• Create small reading spaces for children inside
• Use your backyard or front yard to do some gardening and taking care of plants
• Do some handicraft work like stitching, embroidery, crochet etc
• Painting, coloring or drawing if you are interested in any of them
• Create playing areas for young kids if you have them in your home
• Take small online courses to learn new skills 
• Watch video tutorials about new skills you prefer to learn or develop like knitting, playing any musical instrument etc
• Learn new recipes for cooking, or baking to avoid buying from outside this could save money too
• Create a home based gym or exercise place for whole family especially exercises that does not require any particular tools
• Assign tasks to children at home to keep them occupied and allow them to become independent
• Provide extra paper and color pencils to them for drawing and coloring
• Use old books, magazine pictures for children to cut them out and create comic/story books of their own interest
• Assist and support your husband if he is working from home in managing his files or some typing work if he needs to do that
• Take pictures of your family spending time together as your ever lasting memories.

Understanding Your Kids and Use Of Social Media

  Parents are scared of the excessive use of social media by their children. Unfortunately, there is no straightforward solution to resolve this problem. It seems apparent that social media has penetrated into our professional and personal lives to a significant extent and we are also experiencing its consequences on daily basis.

Perhaps we need to devise a strategy and to start seeing things from a different direction/angle. Since, we cannot stop technology, nor the use of social media, hence we should have a strategy to take the bull by its horns.

We have to devise certain rules in our homes to channelize the time and energy spent on social media. Some of these include:

• Plan a time table for the use of internet
• Spend more time together especially time of taking meals
• Put all devices on silent or switch off at night time
• Avoid using phones while driving, or taking time out with family
• Arrange and prefer one to one meetings with your children in evenings to discuss and share your whole day problems, successes, stories etc prefer listening more than speaking

Understanding your children better and helping them out to overcome common problems is to become their best friends, instead of being authoritative. Discuss and communicate openly and consult them too. Change their perspective towards life from avoiding personal relationships towards valuing personal lives of people around them.

School age is vulnerable in the life of children. They are vulnerable to behavioral changes, emotional distress, health and similar other problems. However, this vulnerability has varied amount of impact at various stages of child development. Hence, parents are the most vital source of inspiration, guidance and support in the life of their children at every stage and age. Some of the recommended therapies to stimulate parent involvement are like:

• Participate in different activities with your children like sports, games, any volunteer opportunities etc
• Support your children in challenging situations
• Provide your children a listening ear in trying times to give them confidence to boost their trust in their parents
• Promote mutual well being
• Create opportunities of spending time with your children like traveling together, going out for picnics, playing with children indoors/outdoors
